Help - Skpe Video Call Upload Speed Problem (AT&T Uverse User)

Hello,

I am currently using Skpe to have video calls with my parents in China everyday. Both my parents and I have broadband connections. My current service provider is AT&T (up to 12mbps download/1.5mbps upload). However when we use Skpe video call, a lot of times my upload speed is less than 10kbps. Sometimes at the beginning of the call, the upload speed is ~140kbps, but after a few minutes, it started to drop. Then I got a connection too slow message (download speed is fine). I used the speedtest.net to check my speed. Both the upload and download speed are well above 500kpbs, which should be sufficient for a good qualify video call. Anybody knows why? (I am using Skpe5.3)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Help - Skpe Video Call Upload Speed Problem (AT&T Uverse User)

Please follow all the steps and install the beta version, not sure if the other side can, their client might be from tom.com

Please follow these Steps:

1. Only do Step 1 if you are on WIN7:

Stop Skype.

Be sure that Compatibility Mode is not enabled (right-click on Skype shortcut icon/launcher and select Properties >> Compatibility) - for Windows 7 users only.

Try to launch Skype.

2. If Step 1 fails or you are NOT using WIN7 do:

Open an Internet Explorer browser, and go to msn.com, what happens?

If it fails, Please do the instructions below. Using your Windows Control Panel, please do:

Internet Options -> Advanced Tab Please click the "Reset" button.

Then, Go to the Connections Tab.

Make sure that the only checkbox checked is "Automatically detect settings", then click the "OK" button.

Close any open Internet Explorer browser windows, open a new IE browser window and try msn.com again. What happens? If it works, please stop/start Skype What happens?

3. If Step 2 fails do:

Please install the beta version using the instructions below:

You can install the Current beta release by doing this from the top of this page:

Get Skype -> Windows -> Choose the beta release, please do NOT remove what you already have installed, simply, install over.

These instructions have worked for many and is the quickest thing to try to resolve issues such as this.

Also, what operating system are you on?

What is the Make and Model of your computer?

Do you have all Windows updates and updates to any hardware devices by the manufacturers?

Thanks. I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite L655. My OS is Windows 7. I think I have all Windows updates. I will try your suggestion to install Beta version tomorrow. Hopefully that works. I will keep you posted.

Re: Help - Skpe Video Call Upload Speed Problem (AT&T Uverse User)

I installed the Beta version. The upload speed is now b/t 80kpbs to 110kbps. This is not as fast as my broadband speed, but much better than before. Hopefully this would solve my problem. Thanks.

Just in order to clarify the very common misunderstanding. The value of bandwidth, which is specified by your Internet Provider, is as a rule given in bits. The upload/download speed in the Technical call Info is given in bytes. With 8 bits per byte, this means that an upload speed of 100kbps corresponds to bandwidth of 800 Kbps.

Re: Help - Skpe Video Call Upload Speed Problem (AT&T Uverse User)

The problem lies with your new ATT router.  The SSID MUST be set to auto.  If it is in another channel, then you will have exactly the problems you are describing.

In Windows, go to START, and in the "search programs and files" box, enter http://the ip address of your router.  You will find the address on the side of your router. Once you are in, go to the WIRELESS tag on top and click on it.  When the page opens, go to the NETWORK section (middle of the page) and change the WIRELESS CHANNEL drop down to AUTO.

Once you have done this, save (bottom of the page).  The program will ask for your password.  Again, check on the side of your router.

Enter your password, and you are done.

Also, you can check to see if there is any channel conflict by using this free tool:

Are you using a wireless network nearby other possible wireless networks, like near or in an apartment/condo like building that might be on your same wireless channel?

If so, please see this free program that can tell you if this is causing you issues as well.
