TASMANIA ONLINE NUMBER???

I am interested in getting an online number for Tasmania, Australia, however it is not an option in the ONLINE NUMBER section. It needs to be prefix (063), and its missing from the list.

Does this mean that Tasmania is inelligible to have an online number????

Hi, i am in Tasmania too and have this problem. for the other states listed, the cost to use Skpye To Go is an untilmed local call. from Tasmania, we are required to call interstate and this is a metered call and costs a great deal more. the area code is the same as Victoria (03) but the call charges are different.

and thanks to the person above me for putting the same request in, i've been meaning to for months!

Um, is Skype going to answer this question? Are we left to select Melbourne and then have Tasmanian friends pay the STD call to connect to our online number???

Hi I am also interested in a Tasmanian number , I wont use the melb` vic  area number as it will be more cost , so will wait and watch , be nice if they did fix our problem , ie

I've just had the same problem.  I spent $16 only to discover no area code for Tasmania.  It's late and I'm tired and very very angry now.  Canberra has one, but not us? 

Yet another instance of Tasmanians being invisible and left out.

Unfortunately, Skype only has Online Numbers in the mainland Australian state capitals, Canberra, and other parts of southeastern Australia.  Apparently Skype's Australian partner doesn't seem to offer Online Numbers in Tasmania, or maybe the prices Skype would have to pay to provide those numbers is a lot more than on the Australian mainland. Someone from Skype would have to chime in and answer that. 

When you were going through the process to purchase an Online Number, you should have been able to see what area codes were available long before you had to purchase the number.  You should have been able to select the city/region (with appropriate area code), and then have an opportunity to find a number with digits you prefer to have in a number. 

I don't think this is a matter of Tasmanians being invisible.  Skype, unfortunately, doesn't offer Online Numbers in a lot of countries (lots of chatter on these forums about Canada, and some about Spain, lately) and states/provinces/areas in certain countries (i.e., no Online Numbers in the US states of Alaska, Hawaii, and Maine - based on recent forum posts).  In some cases (Canada), it appears to be related to local or national regulations.  In other places, the costs are too high for Skype, since Skype uses the same prices for all its Online Numbers.

Thanks for the reply.  I probably went about it arse backwards. I don't know much about it and the way I went in told me  to buy credit in order to set up the number. It never even occurred to me that it might not be available in Tasmania.  I guess I'll have to chalk that one  up to experience.  Such a pity; I have a friend in crisis overseas and wanted to offer more than support over the internet.

the issue of the area code would not show it up. Tasmania has the same area code as Victoria, 03.

i suspect it's more that someone just hasn't realised we are part of Australia.

it's offensive frankly that we do not receive the same service for our money as other Australian capital cities.

It's probably related to whatever costs Skype would have to pay an Australian provider for that service in Tasmania.  It's the same thing for the Northern Territory, or other areas outside of Adelaide and Perth in those two mainland states. 

Skype does not charge different amounts for online numbers in different cities/states/provinces/countries - the same rates are charged for each Online Number, wherever the number happens to be.  If Skype's costs for a number exceed a certain amount, then Skype would either take a loss for offering the number, or would have to raise the rates everyone pays for Online Numbers.
