For users who require an Online Number in countries where that product is not available there is, depending upon individual requirements, a workable alternative involving Skype To Go numbers for the following countries:
- Canada
- Greece
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Portugal
- Slovenia
- Singapore
Here's an example of how it works:
John lives in Toronto, Canada, but recently moved to Australia where he started his new job. Unfortunately there are no Canadian Online Numbers but he still wants his contacts to reach him at local rates from their phones. The solution: John sets up a Skype To Go number with a Toronto area code. He then can register up to a maximum of 20 phone numbers of contacts in Toronto who want to call him abroad (registration is required). Now, when his contacts call the Skype To Go number he set up for them, they get straight through to him on his Skype.
In order to set up a Skype To Go number you either need Skype Credit or a Subscription.
Here’s what you need to do (using Canada as an example):
- If you have Skype Credit or a Subscriptions, sign in to your account and go to the Skype To Go set up.
- Select “Canada” from the drop down menu and click on “Give it a try”
- Click on “Next”
- Under “Contact’s name” enter your own name, for “Contact’s country” select “Skype name” at the end of the list, and under “Contact’s phone” enter your own Skype name. Then click “Continue”.
- Under “Select location” pick the area code in Canada you require. Now, under “Your phone” enter the phone number of one of your contacts, (not your own phone number). After creating a PIN, click “Continue”.
- Record the number on the next page (please ignore any reference to South Sudan, this may be an error). Give it to the contact whose number you registered before. Click on “Finish”. Now when your contact calls this number your Skype will ring.
- If you want more contacts to call you (maximum 20) you will need to register their phones and give them the same number to call.

Thanks,
The only problem to this is that when people call you, they don't get a regular ring, but instead a bunch of internet bleeping sounds. Not good for businesses. Otherwise, still great for friends and family.

I'd also like to know WHY there is no skype number for Canada. It makes it really difficult to keep in touch with family at Christmas, especially with my 93 year old grandmother who would like to call but can't due to me being way overseas and its too expensive for her. I highly recommend getting skype's act together and working on this asap.

Hello,
Unfortunately it's not Skype but the Canadian telco authorities who need to progress this.

NORMAN MUSGRAVE - Why do you suppose MagicJak (sp?) got its act together so fast? Unless the hardware approach is less complex, which is likely. How long has MagicJak been around compared to Skype? Although I am not excited about another piece of hardware or the price to play their game.
NOW, according to the CRTC letter that Mrs T shared however, it looks as if Skype is the foot-dragger here.
HOWEVER:
PLEASE see the CRTC letter to Mrs T and my question there - seems that you need to go further than merely reference "Telco" companies as the nemesis. So far, the role of our CRTC has been essentially ignored, even if it may be a relatively minor one. From that letter, one might infer that Skype only needs one "Telco" although I suspect that too is over-simplification.
ONCE MORE: Skype needs to make a definitive statement about their action and status in this matter! Even if it is merely a matter that they cannot find a low enough price for their required access. Without being more forthcoming, Skype will drive many Canadians away to the competition. Their preoccupation with promotion of Skype on network television seems to have taken away their interest in service, at least to Canada.

I suspect it's not a question of "Skype can't", more like they "won't". If you check out Ms T's letter from the CRTC, they spelled out that 1) they have to enter into an SLA with a Canadian carrier and 2) they have to support the 911/PSAP emergency service.
Skype reps, care to comment on this?
