been hacked and skype stole my credits!!!

Hello everyone,

My account have been hacked and charged $35. Also the hackers spent the whole $35 in credits. Because I use skype almost in the daily basis, I noticed it right away. I contacted skype, told them what happened and they said that they cannot provide a refund and that I should contact my credit card company and dispute the transaction.

Well, I did what they suggested and legitimately bought another $35 in credits so I can talk to my family in Brazil. I used about $4.00 of this $35 and then skype simply took all my credits away and claimed that I spent the fraudulent credits and because of that my credits were taken away. I cannot believe they did this and now skype is saying that I need to buy more credits if I want to make anymore phone calls.

What should I do?

go to support and click support until you can choose "chat with a person". Have your order numbers and account ready and solve it with them. Always better to talk to a person, isn't it?

Re: been hacked and skype stole my credits!!!

Intolerable. My account was also hacked and my credit used on two calls to Taiwan. Skype kindly reset my account password and email at my request, but Skype also gave me the same bullsh*t about not being liable for the money. My money. I bought a service from them, they took my money, their servers were hacked, and they say they're not liable.
The hell they aren't.
I recommend you NEVER "lend" any money to Skype (ie, NEVER buy ANY SKYPE CREDIT). They admit that they're not in charge of custodianship of your money. You're better off just leaving your money on a park bench. At least it would go to some poor homeless person and not into Skype's coffers.

Re: been hacked and BEWARE OF ACCOUNT AUTOREFILL !!!

My Skype account was hacked and my account was on auto-refill.  Before I found out, I was out over $125, $25 at a time through PayPal.  I only found out the account had been hacked because my Skype number called my cell (at 4 a.m.) and since I'm the only one who has access to my Skype account, I went online to check (pretty dumb hackers.)  Skype does not take responsibility for charges run up on hacked accounts. They just send you standard information on how to make your computer more secure. Therefore, autorefill makes NO sense for the consumer.  (In fact, Skype makes more money if someone helps you spend yours.)

Re: been hacked and skype stole my credits!!!

While talking via Skype with a friend in Argentina, my friend mention that there was a musical icon (iTune?) and a statement about a lesson I downloaded from iTune University a couple of hours earlier. Supposedly, it was seen as my 'mood status' (?!)...

Since I did not 'physically' did it, typed those things I was wandering how did they appeared there.

It is very disturbing because although this time it was something completely banal, other 'things' of more serious matter could have transpired. Also this could be a sign that my account was being hacked... How can we make it safer? How can I talk/email to someone in Skype directly? Pretty weird...

The friend also describe a 'screen' with items very different than my usual Skype screen, with many more options.

I have a Macbook with OS X v10.7.2 Lion.

I'll appreciate it very much receiving an explanation and a fix to this "privacy" problem.

Re: been hacked and skype stole my credits!!!

I was hacked by Somalians a few weeks ago (at least they appear to have made calls to Mogadishu). They ran up GBP400 on my account overnight (even though my top-up limit was set at GBP85 a month).
As soon as I woke up I saw the changed email notification, and Skype restored control of my account to me pretty quickly, but said as with other people here, that I would have to ask my bank to deal with any refund which I am still wrangling with the bank about.

My password was non-guessable, and I am super-aware of phishing emails and other scams. Since no other services I subscribe to were compromised, and since loads of other people seem to have suffered the same fate, I am confident it is a weakness in Skype's security, not mine.
When I pressed Skype on how someone could do GBP400 when the 3 calls made from my account showed 0.00 minutes and $0.00 cost, they said it had been done through my Business Control Panel, but I have no idea how, and they wont restore access to me there, so I can't find out.
I am also restricted from recharging my account, which is getting seriously low (and I rely on the account and the skype phone number for my business), and no-one at Skype is answering any of my emails requesting that I might add credit.
Seriously frustrating and awful service. Skype are officially rubbish.

Re: been hacked and skype stole my credits!!!

Well how do you think Microsoft are going to make enough money to make buying Skype worth it? But seriously, my account was hacked and the thieves made several calls to Egyptian and Indonisian mobiles all on 2nd Dec. between 13:05 & 13:28 (don't know who's time zone though, GMT I suppose). I have a new install of Linux Mint 11 on my system so it is unlikely that my machine has any malware on it, I am also aware of phishing emails and scam 'phone calls, though I've received none from 'Skype'. Is it possible that the Skype servers or user accounts database has been hacked? We ought to be told!
