Harassment

Last night I received over 40 calls in under a 2 hour period on my cell phone.  All those calls were from Skype.  Unlike a regular phone, there isn't a single number assigned to a user so every call was from a different Skype number.  That prevents me from blocking the person perpetrating this harassment.

I have an appointment with my attorney later today to discuss my options, and I plan to file a police report.  My basic problem now is that I want the harassment to stop.  I use my phone for business and cannot change the number.  I also work in a situation where I am on call 24/7 so I must have my phone on.

I have sent a cease & desist request to Skype requesting that they not allow any phone calls to call my phone.

What more can I do to stop this harassment?

Re: Harassment

BTW:  I was NOT a Skype customer.

I spent two hours scouring the Skype website for a contact to use when being harassed by a Skype member - to no avail.  I had to become a Skype member to contact support regarding this harassment.  That really added insult to injury.  If there is contact information for non-customer's it should be included with the "Contact Us" information.

I have blocked the harasser's regular phone number in my cell phone.  Unfortunately, with Skype he is given a new phone number every time he calls me allowing him to call sometimes 2-3 times each minute.  Every call he makes that causes my phone to ring blocks me from receiving important phone calls from work, where I am on-call 24/7.

Re: Harassment

The use of the Skype service through this user might be a violation of Skype's terms of service. Did you contact Skype customer service about this already? They are able to assist quickly.

I'm curious how you discovered that those calls were originating from Skype?

Re: Harassment

[ Edited ]

interesting! i am also getting harrassed with random skype numbers calling me multiple times per day, and i have been for about a week. additionally, i am recieving multiple emails per day inviting me into Skype Managers of people I dont know, who are then giving me credit. two days ago i was logged out of a video chat while on the call, and had to reset my password to get back into skype. yesterday, all of my contacts dissapeared from my skype client. today, i noticed that there is a long list of calls to various countries in Africa from my account (i have never voluntarily called Africa). my conclusion is that my account has been hacked into, and my speculation is that for some reason, people are wanting anonymity to make these calls to Africa, and are adding my account to the skype manager in order to dump money into it to make the calls, and they keep changing skype managers so that it wont be tracked.

i did a web chat with customer service yesterday and they were completely unhelpful and were not able to provide any real assistance. they told me to disregard the 6 or more emails i am getting per day inviting me into "Skype Managers" from people I don't know, and the ensuing credit fluctuation that is occurring in my account as i am automatically added to these skype managers, and someone allocates credit to me, and then the credit dissapears. yesterday my skype credit went from around $10, to $80, back down to around $13 all while i was on the live chat with customer service. today it is back down to just a few cents, which is what it is supposed to be.

they also told me to disregard the 6+ phone calls from skype numbers that i am getting per day. the representative said "skype is not calling you" therefore she could not help. they went through basic troubleshooting (quit and relaunch the app) with me that i had already done on my own several times. the call was incredibly frustrating and a waste of my time.

this feels like a huge problem if skype cannot provide protection from this kind of harrassment, and i would be interested in getting in on any legal action.

during the course of writing this, i received 2 calls from the mysterious skype numbers. today i have received over 9 calls from the mysterious numbers so far, starting at 5am. the numbers all begin with 2 and are 11-12 digits long with no spaces. for example "22468212464" and "22463389216". often they just ring my phone once and then hang up, which doesnt allow me to answer. yesterday i was able to answer one of them and the people said "hello? hello?" and then spoke in another language to one another (there were people in the background on the call). i said  "wrong number" and then they laughed and hung up.

please help.

Re: Harassment

A quick Google led to the knowledge that all these numbers are from Skype.  People are complaining about scammers, telemarketers, and harassment over these numbers all over the web, and other people are responding that they are Skype numbers that relatives have been allocated whle making calls.  Do a quick Google yourself.

Then I gave the list to Skype customer support personnel when I reported the harassment and it was confirmed as theirs, although it was not confirmed what account was using the numbers at the time.

Skype should be required to indicate they are a Skype number in the caller ID and provide a means for us to report those numbers w/o signing up for an account.  It's unfair to allow an anonymous source of phone numbers that can easily be used by scammers, telemarketers, and harassers.

I am on the Do Not Call List, and I do not expect any more calls from Skype - an organization I have told to cease and desist.

Re: Harassment

@gelfovision: Please report your incident in a different thread. How do you know as well that your harassing calls are originating from Skype as well?
Your Skype Manager problem is a seperate one that seems like it was already resolved by Skype's customer service.

@valathel: I googled above numbers and have zero results. As you already contacted Skype customer service and they took action it seems your problem has been taken care of as well.

I'm sorry again for the inconvenience obviously caused by a Skype user that violated Skype's Terms of Service. As soon as we learn about that we block this behaviour.

Zero results?  I urge anyone here who is reading this response to google 661-748-0240 and take a quick read of the results on the first page alone and tell me there are "zero results".  I click on these links and people are saying "yeah this number is Skype" on top of "I had telemarketers calling from this number".  Why would Skype allow anonymous telemarketing to occur from their numbers when the users are violating the Do Not Call laws?  Take some responsibility.

Also, I never received the promised contact from Skype Customer Support.  Did they ban my harasser?   If you can confirm as a representative of Skype that something was actually done I want to update my lawyer.

Re: Harassment

Ok.  I just found out Customer Support did nothing since the harasser is calling me again using a Skype phone number that he used before - 661-748-0242.

Do not allow Skype calls to my cell phone that is listed in my account.

What good are you people if you promote harassment by giving random phone numbers to these people to use?  This is ridiculous.  Wait until my attorney hears it has continued.

How many times do you let someone bombard a phone with calls before they violate their Terms of Use?
