Questions About Unlimited World Plan

[ Edited ]

I live in the U.S. and I will be leaving for Poland on Saturday for three weeks, and I have installed Skype on my iPhone4.

I've decided I'd like to use Skype to make calls while I am in Poland, and I'm not 100% sure about how the Unlimited World Plan works.

Here are my questions;

1.

- When I buy the Skype Unlimited World plan, will I be able to make calls to landlines in Poland while I myself am in the country as well?

- And also at no extra charge from the $13.99 I'd have spent on the plan?

2. While in Poland, I will be able to call my landline home phone in the U.S., correct?

3. I have to keep my phone's data and service off while in Poland, so people do not try to message me while I am away and rack up charges to my mobile carrier bill.

- Can someone please explain to me (in very simple terms) how it will work that I will be able to call landlines and mobile numbers (with skype credit which I will buy) without logging into skype? This is the main thing I have not been able to understand when reading about the Skype-to-go numbers. Is it even possible if I have my phone on airplane mode to turn service off?

Thank you

Going through your questions...

1. Your location does not matter with Skype.  The prices, whether you buy a subscription or pay per call with Skype Credit, are only concerned with the destinations of your calls.  With the Unlimited World subscription you mentioned, you will be able to call landline phones in Poland as well as landline and mobile phones back in the US - whether you are in Poland, the US, or anywhere else logging into Skype - for no additional charge beyond what you paid for the subscription.

Remember to dial all numbers using Skype in the international format, even when you are in the country you are trying to call.  For example, to call a number in New York City's 212 area code, you dial +1 212 xxx xxxx.  For a Warsaw landline number, dial +48 22 xxx xx xx.  Remember that Polish mobile phones (replace the 22 area code in the Warsaw example above with 50, 51, 53, 60, 66, 69, 72, 73, 78, 79, and 8:cool: are not covered by the Unlimited World subscription.  You would need to have Skype Credit on your account to call a Polish mobile number, or other numbers not covered by the subscription.

2. Yes, you would be able to call back to your home phone in the US while in Poland using the Unlimited World subscription.  That would be covered by the subscription, and Skype would not charge you anything extra for that call.

3. Since you mentioned you have an iPhone 4, you could turn on its WiFi and use that when you are in range of WiFi hotspots.  You may be able to put your phone in Airplane mode and then turn on WiFi, since there are now more and more flights that offer in-flight WiFi services.  Again, something you can try out when around a WiFi hotspot (or your home network, if you have WiFi at home) to confirm before leaving.

Skype To Go is an alternative to using the Skype programs and apps when you can't log into Skype.  You can obtain a number in the country you are visiting (Skype has numbers in Poland), and then you call that number from a telephone.  When you do that, you can then call contacts that you have previously defined, or you can use Skype To Go to dial numbers.  If you do this through your iPhone from the US on a Polish mobile network, you would incur roaming charges from your US mobile carrier, but you could make calls from some other Polish telephone to avoid that.  If you have a subscription, calls made to countries (and types of phones) covered by the subscription can be made for no extra charges with Skype To Go.  If you call somewhere not covered by your subscription, then you would need to have Skype Credit to cover those calls.

Hope that helps.  Enjoy your trip!
