Thinking more about text chat, I think the text chat could help the use of Skype (if it's a goal for the Skype Company) because PSvita is a portable device and differently from PC, you use it outdoor and sometimes the place where you are is not good for a skype call.
With the text chat I can ask or answer to a text chatting request for a call.
Example
I'm in a conference as spectator where a calling could be a problem.
A friend of mine ask me by chat to do a call.
I can reply him to wait a minute.
I can reach a better place and I call him.
Without text chat I have to turn off skype and don't use it.
I think it's better if Skype is usefull for most of the situations

its the only reason i haven't got skype credit.
excellent app, but I've missed several messages from australia.
Essential for the proper use of skype when there is a time difference involved.
AND WHY ISNT SKYPE ON THE PS3?
wrong thread i know, but it needs to be said.

You can (at least theoretically) Skype IM through the web browser with http://imo.im
and for actual texting you can go the free google voice route also through the browser

I would like to know the thought process of the people who decided to leave the Text IM feature out of Skype on the PS Vita! Surely it's not because of the input method used by the PS Vita? If it was then why was it not a problem for iPhone and Android versions?
Maybe it was to try to get people to use voice/video chatting more? Again, if this is the case, why do updates for other versions continue to have the feature?
Here are the main reasons why the Text IM feature is ESSENTIAL in Skype on the PS Vita:
1. Data roaming costs on 3G. We are not all well paid and can afford the higher data usage when using voice calls through Skype. Not to mention the vastly higher use of video calls! Text IM (and SMS for those who need that function) is cheaper to use over 3G.
2. Privacy. Communicating via text is silent! If you are in a public place, you may not want everyone knowing your business with a Skype contact! Text IM would allow private communication in a public place.
3. Not everyone who uses Skype have microphones or cameras or may not like those means of communication! You are preventing us from communicating with many of our contacts by leaving out this feature!
Now, if those reasons are not valid in the eyes of the Skype programmers then they need to be fired and another team assigned to add the essential missing features.
As for the people suggesting using Google Voice, why would we want to do that when our contacts are on Skype? We are using Skype because we like using Skype, and some people have large lists! Stop suggesting Google Voice, if you like it so much, go use it yourself and leave us Skype users to continue using Skype as we want!
