Some weeks already sometimes can not hear other parties. They hear well. It will fix "automatically". Issue also comes back randomly.
Starting today, can not log in into Skape using that device. Do you have made some changes killing compatibility with older hardware handsets?
I too am also having this issue today. Both of my SPH200D phones will not connect. I have rebooted the base station, and also tried resetting the base station thru the web access panel. Still no go. My account does work using the iphone app, so this is definitely a Skype/Netgear issue.
What Secret Services ? And it that case what about all the other hard wired phone using skype, It seems to be affecting SPH200D only as here in the UK with my phone it wont login. I have been on skpype support chat. The chap said "We will be collecting report as this and have this submitted for further checking" I suggest you contact Skype support as well to log the problem.

Got to office to find same problem described here with my SPH200D. Forced a device reset 2x and a couple of lengthy sign-in attempts - it kept failing. Finally, 3rd sign-in lasted forever - (15 min) ... but finally worked. Hopefully, Skype addressed the situation!
