I'm not happy with the skype format on windows 8

Having purchased a new laptop that's loaded with windows 8, I'm not happy with the skype full screen format. Can I minimise the screen in order to see both skype, and my current work at the same time, or better still, being a technophobe, can I still use windows 8, but revert to my old skype programme, which was so easy to manage?
