Just got a message to upgrade to the newest version and when I did, all my contacts have been lost and apparently replaced with every single dead, old, one-time, enemy etc etc contact which could be found anywhere on my computer! Most of them, numbers which could be found even without names??
Is this permanent or just an offer to add these to my contacts, - like Linkedin does to all new members as a default, causing everyone to look like they are asking all their enemies to link in to them?
How do I get my old contacts back please?

I'm afraid I don't really understand what you are seeing.
I assume you have upgraded to 5.8.0. What screen are you looking at?
You open Skype and on the left you have a sidebar with "Skype Home" at the top and "Contacts" beneath that. Assuming you have selected contacts you have a window to the right with a number of 'buttons' to the left of the "Add Contact" button. I can't remember what appears there by default but you will have at least "Skype" and "Address Book".
Are you saying there old contacts in the "Skype" view? Or have you got "Address Book" selected? "Address Book" shows information from you Mac Address Book and has nothing to do with Skype, it is just displayed there for convenience and you can stop it displaying in Preferences.
I've found the Mac Address Book can have a tendency to automatically import address information from other sources (I once had this happen when I attached an external hard disk with a copy of a Windows address book file on it) but it is the Address Book which needs to be edited, not Skype contacts.
This may be your problem but if it is something different I think you will need to give more information on exactly what you doing and what you are seeing.

OK Thanks
The problem seems to be that it shows all extraneous contacts by default: As you say, on the right is the two arrows where you press to see your skype contacts

I have the same problem. I have lost most of my old contacts which is very disappointing.
Does Skype have a solution to this problem or will I be forced to find my old contacts and get their numbers (or Skype I.D).
If so, how do I get their Skype details?
