Can't download proper version

This is the craziest error message I have ever had:
The download process has completed. However, the version of the downloaded application (5.3.0.1093) is not what we were expecting (5.3.0.1074), therefore it can’t be installed. Press Manual Update to download the updater via web browser
When I press Manual Update, it takes me to the Skype home page, where I see no way to download any version other than 5.3.0.1093
Please advise

Give this a try: scroll to the bottom of this forum page and click on Mac under Get Skype. If you prefer the more compact user interface of v.2.8.x, simply scroll to the bottom of the resulting page and click on the button to get that one. Should work a treat...

Just got the same thing:
The download process has completed. However, the version of the downloaded application (5.5.60.2340) is not what we were expecting (5.3.0.1074), therefore it can’t be installed.
And according to another thread, this problem has been around since September. Add to that declining sound quality and increasingly quirky notification behaviour, and I'm getting closer to giving up on Skype.
