This posting intended for utah_bound.
Microsoft had acquired Skype according to May 10th, 2011 press releases. Tony Bates is the CEO. According to this forum and others I've read, users who use both Windows and Apple platforms prefer the Windows platform because problems are fixed. I share frustrations with other Mac users especially those that pay for the service.

Come on guys I'll never get used to v5.x. Reverting three times already to 2.8 and it's way way better. How can we say it louder to be heard?!

And that's my rant, which will disappear into the Skype public relations vacuum.

Quite right, the new interface is hopeless, the previous UI was much easier to use, why on earth did they change it? Change for change sake, there's an old axiom, dont try to fix if if it aint broke. Here they changed something and made it worse. Not only that, there's no way to remove a contact with an incorrect number or to delete duplicates or to edit wrong numbers what's up you folks at Skype, you are getting our money why aren't you listening?

Of course it's hopeless. Microsoft has owned Skype since 2011. View Skype's history on Wikipedia. Why should they (Microsoft) upgrade it for the Mac when their user base is on PCs?
Skype was good at one time and usable on the Mac. I don't believe as long as Microsoft owns it that you will see a valid intent to make it better on the Mac. Search forums and blogs on the internet and use the previous version that'll work for you. There are sites that still allow download of some previous versions.
I'm actually surprised you found this forum. This forum is like a black hole to Microsoft. They do not listen. I know this won't make you feel better except to understand you are not alone. Good luck!
downgrade to skype 2.8 (mac)

skype 5 sucks for a fact. no more comments needed on that.
i already considered changing to an alternative service if i wouldn't have to use skype for business matters. as a last measure i downgraded to 2.8 - what a relief!
2.8 runs smoothly on lion 10.7.4, also ecamm's call recorder (v2.3.24) is recording video and/or audio just as fine as it should.
so, if skype 5 is a pain in your ass as well, downgrade to your preferred vintage version of skype which you can download e.g. from http://mac.oldapps.com/skype.php (for mac and PC).
do your homework, skype!
