"skype quit unexpectedly" after opening chat window

well im having the same problem .. and i tried to update both the system to 10.6.8 and the skype to 5.3 and i tried 2 delete the preferences but nothing works... so untill this problem is solved you guys can complete your work normally on the old version 2.6 or 2.8, thats what i did ... lets say thank you for the skype support heheh cheers...

HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. tried everything from starting a new account, to trying to find my old contacts.

It has something to do with dotnet, try reinstalling dotnet 4, it fixed mine.

this is the advice on the skype page, worked for me: Windows

Click Start, type run and press Enter. (On Windows XP: Click Start and then Run.)
Type the following and click OK.

%appdata%\skype
Locate and delete the file shared.xml.
If you cannot find this file:
Click Start, type run and press Enter. (On Windows XP: Click Start and then Run.)
Type the following and click OK.

control folders
In the View tab, ensure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled.
Repeat steps 1-3.
Restart Skype.

Mac

Open Finder and locate the following folder:

~/Library/Application Support/Skype
Delete the file shared.xml.
Restart Skype.

my solutions after trying %appdata%\skype and deleting recommended files failed in windows 7 ultimate environment repeatedly, I ran my uniblue registry cleaner 2012 and in the logs it found several references to skypePNR clsid points to missing.... registry entries. Fix registry entries and now skype works again... I would only recommend runing a registry cleaner you have used or trust.
