After several install / un-install attempts I got Skype 64bit working on Ubuntu 11.10.
It seems not all the Qt dependancies are needed. Here is what I did.
sudo apt-get remove --purge skype sudo apt-get install libdbusmenu-qt2:i386 libxv1:i386 sni-qt:i386
After installing these packages, I downloaded and installed Skype 2.2.0.35-1 64bit from the Skype website - and all is working perfectly. Without the 32bit packages installed, Skype would start but no application indicator icon would appear.

I tried to install skype today on 11.10 and hit a problem which I think is this one.
I tried
sudo -i
skype
And it appeared to work with 2.2.0.35-1

Hi!
I'm trying to run Skype on Ubuntu 11.10 (32). I downloaded the deb file from Skype site, and installed it.
After type my ID and password, the Skype connects and then close! The window and the icon on systray disappears. Observing the process window, the same: when I launch skype, there is the process. After login, the process is suddenly closed. If I type an incorret password, the window still on. This happens just with the correct ID and password, just after login.
What that can be?

It will open and ask for your details. You are now in Skype!I hope this will help you. I have had a great deal of help reading others blogs and hope this works for you.
While your attempt to be helpful is commendable, "Open a terminal as root.Type skype." is bad advice. Why is it bad to run as root? A search of Google for the answer to that question will give a great many results. It is probably not so good to advise "a clean system with no updates" either. A clean system with all the latest updates will be the least likely to have troubles installing and running a program properly, and the updates often include bugfixes and security patches for the system and software installed on it.
If your advice to run in root mode, or without updates is a direct result of "others blogs", please consider educating those folks that they are advising bad security practices and should try to learn for themselves why running software as root is a bad habit to get into.

I've done everything possible but Skype(32-bit) just won't work on my Laptop. It signs in and crashes immediately. Nothing written here has helped to resolve the issue ![]()
And I ain't no developer, just installed Ubuntu three days ago.

After runnin from terminal, there's this:
(skype:2804): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",
(skype:2804): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",
(skype:2804): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",
(skype:2804): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",
and then the program runs but after signing in, poof it's gone!
