I keep getting the message " can't overwrite old skype application': I have tried to rash the old one. 

Message keeps returning.

Can you help?

Me three!

I get the message to upgrade to the newest version of Skype, click on Install and it appears to download.

But when I click Relaunch, I get the error message that Skype can't be overwritten. 

Suggestions, anyone?

I, too, am getting the same msg.  The update goes thru the download process but when I hit the "launch" button, I'm informed that "can't overwrite old skype application"  I've tried everything to no avail.  I thot perhaps it was 'cuz I'm using a Macbook Pro laptop?

well guys, if you cannot overwrite it, DELETE IT !

then install the new version

The problem is that the file permissions are not allowing you to write. This means you cannot overwrite the old file. The real solution is to change permissions.

On the Mac, this means selecting Skype.app in the Applications folder, Right click or press Command I to bring up the info window, and then set the permissions to write as well as read at teh bottom of the dialogue box.

Are you kidding? The whole point of the Mac OS interface is that it's supposed to "just work" without every user needing to become an expert in permisisons, registries, etc. I don't like manually adjusting permissions for applications. If the installer needs more permissions, it should have a script to adjust them, ask for my password, and do its job. Pretty crummy update so far!
