I have seen this problem reported repeated times, but no fixes from Skype yet.
The closest was (google for jira.skype.com/browse/SCL-670 and check the first result, I am not allowed to post urls apparently).
But Marco Cimmino blames it on Debian: "the problem is the FIRST event sound that is played". In my case, this is not true at all. Sound works fine, sound events happen, and there is no freezing that I can relate to that. Anyhow, unabling the pulse libraries seems to work ("sudo chmod a-r libpulse.so.0.12.3 libpulse-simple.so.0.0.3 libpulsecommon-0.9.22.so"), although I am not 100% sure (it has been only a few hours working OK).
Is anyone from Skype reading this?

("sudo chmod a-r libpulse.so.0.12.3 libpulse-simple.so.0.0.3 libpulsecommon-0.9.22.so")
WARNING! This tip will break alot of other stuff on your system! Flash will, for example, not be able to use pulseaudio any more, hence you cannot browse sites with audio while having skype calls. This is not a very great workaround!

Is it possible that this bug is purposely put/not fixed because Skype is now owned by Microsoft?

I am suffering from this too. I have to say that I do get the impression that we are unlikely to ever see a full release (non-beta) version for Linux now. I have also found issues with sound handling. Unless there is some movement to fix these issues on Linusx I will be closing my account as soon as my credit is used up. Whilst some of the service is free some is not and I am a paying customer. LISTEN UP MICROSOFT I am a paying customer and I deserve something that works. If you aren't going to fix do not provide a Linux version and continue to alienate yourself from tens of millions of potential customers across the world.

Kubuntu 12.04 + Skype 2.2.0.35 crashes since a few days on every start up.
Before that I was able to fix this issue by making a "Logs" directory inside ~/.Skype.
But however I am able to use this piece of technology by runnig Skype inside gdb.
Come on Microsoft. You can do better. Open source it, or get help. There are pretty good linux professionals out there. I suggest icculus.
Skype+gdb:
apt-get install gdb
from a consolle: gdb skype and then <r> + <enter>

You are a paying customer. Very good, I was considering to be it too. But because skype is not open, and linux just hangs down there, I di'nt. However the last version 2.2.0.35 was good enough for me, I cannot fully communicate now with the MS-scene because of some update to theire software.
If I was paying right now, I was even more furious then at this moment.
( sorry, forgot this : ubuntu 11.04 - pulssound - skype 2.2.0.35 working fine, only no video from MS-Skype 5.X ... )
