I used to be able to use Command+F to search within a conversation. I'm not sure of the last time I used this feature, so I'm not sure it ever worked in my last version. When it didn't work, I upgraded to the newest version (5.2) and it's still not working. I have not tried installing an earlier version to see if it starts working again, but that could be an option. Here is what it says in support.
How do I search for something I’ve written in a conversation?
You can find something specific you’ve written or been sent in a conversation by searching for a word that was typed in that conversation. To do this:
- Sign in to Skype.
- Select the conversation you would like to search.
- From the menu bar, select Conversation > Find or press Ctrl + F on the keyboard. A search box opens.
- Type the word or words you are looking for. Press Enter or click the Next or Previousbuttons to search the conversation.
Even though I was searching in Mac support, I'm pretty sure this is support for Windows, since I don't even have "Find" as choice in the Conversation drop-down from the menu bar. Ctrl+F doesn't work of course either. Any ideas?

I did actually find other instructions that were written for Mac. I'm not sure why the first time it took me to the other information...
- Sign in to Skype.
- Select the conversation you would like to search.
- At the top of the conversation window, under View Earlier Messages, select either 1 Week,2 Weeks, 1 Month, 3 Months, 6 Months or 1 Year. This displays the conversation history for that period.
- From the menu bar, select Edit > Find or press Cmd + F on the keyboard. A search box opens.
- Type the word or phrase you are looking for and click the Next or Previous buttons to search the conversation. Any matches will be highlighted.
Still, Cmd + F is a no go. "Find" is in the Edit drop-down. However, the only option I have under Find is "Jump to Selection". In other words, there is no way to search.

I've been experiencing the same problem. It appears that the search feature for chat logs is at least partially broken. However, I think I've stumbled across a work-around. If you select Edit > Find > Find and then enter a term to search and hit return, skype just beeps and doesn't find the term. However, if you then select Edit > Find > Find Again (command-g on Mac), skype does find the term and jumps to the next instance.
