Microsoft *edited* Skype up!

Flash ads that are impossible to block, the Facebook tab is impossible to hide, Linux version doesn't seem to be ever updated (but the is no Facebook and ads...)...

By windows you can just click ads away and under settings you can turn the adds off (under Notifications ).

Re: Please tell the truth.

Why don't we just lobby the Wine Devs to make it work with wine? Then we can all use the latest windows version.

Then we get the best of both worlds... a killer app, on a great OS (instead of on the retro windows).

Re: Please tell the truth.

Wine developers are trying to make every Windows application run anyway (after all, that's what Wine is all about  )

Re: Please tell the truth.

You can disable Skype's ads, but not the third party flash ads on your main screen...

When there was an ad from kia.cz (Czech branch of car manufacturer KIA) I even tried to install a firewall and disable access to this domain, but Skype somehow got over it and still was displaying that ad).

Re: Please tell the truth.

To be fair, Linux is a bit of a moving target with all the different distros, ongoing changes to the kernel etc. and as a user community, we are relatively small and probably less likely to pay money for a service, so of little interest to them. Yes its closed-source but I think you're in dreamland if you think MS is going to OS Skype. I was having a lot of problems with Skype but (a) the Ubuntu webcam support wasn't good (a Logitech which I later realised was having issues with the kernel uvcvideo module) and (b) I was using Ubuntu 9 which originally introduced pulseaudio and it had never really worked through all of the upgrades. Since I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 and got a webcam with good linux support, I haven't had any problems with Skype at all. Its certainly getting a bit stale compared with the Windows and Mac versions but it works, and with no ads or nags.

Re: Please tell the truth.

A question for Claudius, will this update bring the Linux version up to date with the Windows and OS X versions, or will it be a small bug fix release?

Re: Please tell the truth.

In my opinion users needs only two features:

1. Video in conference mode (like in windows version)
2. True, stable 64 bit version.

Skype for Linux - missing features...

my expeirence with skype 2.2 "beta" on 32-bit ubuntu 12.04 is good. it's stable and works.

but i'd really like the ability to maximize the video screen (like in windows).
