I'm a late-comer to Skype. Now using it because of work. It's seriously taking a toll on my machine. Over 200MB working set (memory). That's ridiculous for this app that does nothing most of the time. Please fix this! I don't have the option of not using it!

I absolutely hate the UI.  The are a few small changes that would take no time at all that would be a huge win.  Get rid of minimum sizes for columns.  If I don't use tags or stars, let me at least shrink them so I can have more width for names.  Why NOT do something your users are begging for? I would so like to delete my Skype account at this point.  If I had *any* other option, I would take it in a heartbeat.  Your UI has made me hate your service.  Your refusal to fix it has made me hate your company.

It is absolutely ludicrous that a company could take a good product and make it so bad, then continue making it worse in the face of a torrent of customers begging for correction. If the Skype engineers are really this incompetent, why don't they just scrap the 5.x GUI and go back to 2.8 which everyone was happy with? In fact, I have engineers who could fix it for you. This really is unimaginably ridiculous.

I just installed the Beta. Same problem.

Agree with virtually all of the above posts... Screen real estate is precious... Why Skype persists with the latest UI is beyond me... still a "happy camper" using 2.8... perhaps the adage "old friendships never die" is appropriate in this case... <sigh>

Am new on Skype. When entering I always have to download a version, because Skype doesn't show up. Then I download  but it appears without any windows from which I can phone, **bleep** it! And yes, the truly Amercian way of trying to sell me a lot of things, while I am presnet, doesn't fail at all. How am I abled to TALK with this thing. Help is muc needed. Thanks in advance.'

It helps to install the downloaded application.  Open the .dmg file and drag the Skype icon across the right-facing arrow and plunk it into the Applications folder icon in the same window.  You'll be able to open it from within your Applications folder.

I am posting in support of this thread in the vain hope that Skype will take notice. 

I am persistent Skype 2.8 user who is examining every alternative that I can find. When I find one that satisfies the needs of my team, I am leaving Skype after many years of buying Skype credit. The dark saga over the dysfunctional Skype 5 interface has spoiled the relationship with a company that I once liked.

Now that Skype is owned by Microsoft, and with the advent of advertisements for non-paying customers which necessitates a single-window interface for all, I have abandoned hope of a new dawn. I am hopeful that a combination of FaceTime and iMessage (which is needed on the Mac too, please, Apple) will replace Skype once-and-for-all and sunshine will abound again.

unfortunately, i agree - very poorly thought-out UI.  did you guys not test?  i appreciate a lot of work went into it and it's someone's baby, but unfortunately it's just not well designed.  you do need to test UIs in the real world, with people of all different levels of technical aptitude, not just push them out.

Skype 5 is completely disgusting, useless, and it is getting worse.

• To show the entire contact list requires a huge window.

• You have "Recent Contact List", "Main contact list", and "Contacts Monitor". So you can see some contact three times. This is definitely ridiculous.

• It is not possible anymore to make a selection of the screen for sharing, so when you have a display larger than 1280x800 you show everything with no details. And sharing a screen selection with 2.8 version doesn't work anymore, at least in Lion.

• And now Skype is combined with the failed and horrible contact list of Facebook.

It is obviously that Skype lost focus. And being in the Microsoft hands, that use to launch a good product every 9 years, we are forced to ask our customers to contact us in a new IM.

Maybe it is Time to use Gtalk in iChat and Google Voice for calling...
