The installation is "successful", but when it is attempting to run, it works, and then quits with absolutely no windows. Help?
EDIT- byt "it works", I mean, the Skype icon appears by the cursor and bounces, attempting to run it. No windows ever open during the "running" process.

Just press alt f2 and run
mv ~/.Skype/shared.xml ~/.Skype/shared~.xml
It should work now

While checking for the skype subdir, I found /usr/share/skype which contains two subdir of lang and sounds, but no other files. Where can I find the skype files you mention?

Here is the error message I get when running the script you suggested:
mv: cannot stat `/root/.Skype/shared.xml': No such file or directory

because you run the script as root. I didn’t say you need to be root. If You prefer, you can run this:
mv /home/USERNAME/.Skype/shared.xml /home/USERNAME/.Skype/shared~.xml

I had the same problem with opensuse 11.3 and skype 2.2.0.35
After installing pulseaudio 0.9.21 from opensuse the problem was solved.
