Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

Hello All,

After experiencing similar issues, I have eliminated the variables. I used my headset for a skype to phone call on my wife's MacBook Pro, which we had not yet upgraded (if that is what we must call it) to Lion. The call was pristine.

I have pursued tech support on this issue with the supplier of my Jabra Pro (Hello Direct at 800-Hi-Hello), Apple Care, and my ISP. My conclusion is that this is an incompatiblity on the part of the headset firmware with Lion.

I have pushed the issue with Hello Direct and they assure me they are escalating it. They will either let me know that they will work with Jabra to update the firmware of the headset to be compatible or inform me that I have to purchase another headset.

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

To advertise Skype certified USB headsets as a way to deal with the bad audio artifact of all Skype versions 2.4 and 5.x on OS X Lion is in my point of view the worste excuse to explain a software which has simply an audio USB bug.

No other audio chat software from iChat to GoogleTalk has that problem at all.

In my case, I simply stoped using Skype as it is an inferior product and I have better experience with iChat and GoogleTalk, heck even ooVoo offers a better service now.

Skype was once great - but they lost tough to reality.

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

I have the same issue- just switched to Mac and got a Voyager Pro+. Works fine on my phone and itunes etc, but terrible through Skype on Lion. Got a replacement headset, same issue.
I use Skype for work, no chance to change, it would be at least somewhat encouraging to see a response from Skype about somewhere- I wouldn't expect one from Apple unless 10% of macbooks spontaneously combusted...

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

[ Edited ]

Same Problem here, Lion, Logitech USB Headset, Skype 5.3

Headset works fine in every application for both playing sound and recording, except in Skype.

In Skype, the Mic still works perfectly, the other side can hear me very well, but all sound played through the headphone part is stuttering all the time, at a steady and very fast interval.

It's not the connection or skype itself, since all calls work perfectly with sound played through macbook built-in speakers or 3.5mm headphones.

Looks like Lion broke something between Skype and the USB interaction.

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

This problem still exists after multiple calls to Skype and Apple Lion Support.  The upshot:  Skype support gave up and told me it was Apple's problem or the headset manufacturer's( A Blueparrott X250, which, by the way, works perfectly with Skype on my PC running Windows XP SP3, and worked perfectly with Snow Leopard - the problem only exists on Lion and started the day I upgraded).  Apple Support talked to me for an hour, we went through all sorts of fixes, and none of them affected the problem.  The bluetooth headset works fine with all other mic applications on Lion, only Skype is a problem.  This is clearly Skype's issue and Skype's alone, and they are ignoring it - their solution:  buy more hardware from them.  If I don't get a fix soon, I'm cancelling my Skype service, which is too bad because it's been very good so far.  Google voice, here I come.

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

I noticed strange things about Skype too and feel I am being gouged out of a lot of money from them, I had paid for Skype Pro, then I get automatic billing fees of 3 dollars a month, on top of what O pay on my Skype credit. Now I see strange things in Skype search since Lion is in too, the window seems like it is opening and close sing fast , it only stops when I force quit Skype. I am still trying to figure out how Skype is getting money from my bank, when normally I canceled auto bank payments.

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

Also having this stuttering issue with incoming audio. iTunes works fine playing music using my wireless headset (from Maplins - a 2.4Ghz wireless Raxconn RX-W007), and also input is fine on testing with Quicktime Audio Recording....

So it is clearly Skype (even though just updated to latest 5.3.0.1093).

Are they even listening? Do they even care?

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

I have the exact same problem with my Logitech USB headset. The headset works fine with other applications in OSX Lion but with skype the sound is constantly chopped.

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

I am having the same issue.

The problem I see is when I make an outbound group call, the audio I hear is garbled. There is no problem with inbound group calls, inbound single calls, or outbound single calls.

Not sure if it is:

  • Skype application
  • Logitech G930 headset
  • Lion USB sound drivers

Google for 'G930 Headset OSX Lion Skype Group Call' to see the Logitech post.

Re: Lion upgrade breaks sound quality

Yeah, I've tried several bluetooth headsets on Skype 5.3 running Lion. All of them produce breaks in voice quality: short, repeated blank spaces.

Skype: Do Something. Your product is starting to suck a little bit.
