Well, Microsoft bought Skype. Is it any surprise that such changes are happening?
Skype has been on a downward slope since before the sale.

Don't blame MS - it's Apple's fault. They have a stupid theme in OS X Lion that means that colours are out (also no colours in the Finder) - This is a serious Apple UI blunder and I hope that Skype (like Viscosity VPN)), give users the option to have a colour icon to indicate status much more quickly (ditto in Android versions).

I was starting to wonder if my skype was in offline mode or hidden mode or something in the middle, the black icon is really just confusing. I have other icons which have colour in the menu bar, like the dropbox, it dosn't look messed up.
Now that I figured it out it doesn't really matter but I guess it brought down the userfriendly-ness of the application since it will take a moment for everyone to figure out why the icon is black. Black means private or hidden not online

Please give us at least the OPTION to either use coloured or monochrome icons so that the purists can use the black icons and the lazy ones like myself the coloured ones.
Many thanks!

Yes, agreed that the black menu bar icon is not good. Have to do more than glance at it to see your status. Easy fix, though. Please follow Drop Box's lead - so that you can set colour or b/w icons in Preferences. Thanks!

I can't believe the icon was changed to black from green, yellow and red on MAC. I just upgraded to the latest version of skype and was wondering if this is a bug and then I came upon this topic while searching for this on the site.I don't think the multiple colors are ugly at all!
Can Skype please change it back to the very useful and connotative colors?

Completely agree.
Bring back teh colour icon, it was useful. The black just blends in with all the other rubbish THAT IS NOT USEFUL!
