I have just purchased an Acer PC that had Windows 7 (64bit) preinstalled. The Skype that came with it worked OK, but when the first Win7 upgrade to SP1 came through, Skype no longer worked. I then uninstalled Skype and now cannot reinstall it fully.
When I install Skype, the process is completed, but when I start Skype (by clicking on the desktop icon) I get a new window on my browser that points to "file:///C:/ProgramData/Skype/Apps/login/" and then nothing else.
Suggestions?

Problems with the login window are, as a rule, related to problems with your Internet Explorer and JavaScript. Regardless which browser you are using, Skype (since version 5.5) is using Internet Explorer and JavaScript to create and manage the login screen.
Go to Windows Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click on Command Prompt, select 'Run as administrator'.
The Command Prompt window should show:
C:\Windows\SysWoW64>
If what you are seeing is:
C:\Windows\System32>
then in the Command Prompt type: cd.. (2 dots are important) and press Enter.
Now you should see this in the Command Prompt:
C:\Windows>
Next type cd syswow64 and press Enter.
Now you should see this in the Command Prompt:
C:\Windows\SysWoW64>
Type this and then press Enter:
regsvr32 jscript.dll
Next type this and press Enter:
regsvr32 jscript9.dll
After each Enter you should receive a message saying that DllRegisterServer in XXX.dll succeeded.
Reboot your computer.
Make now the test showing if your Internet Explorer can execute JavaScript.
Open in your Internet Explorer (no other browser but only IE) this page:
http://www.mistered.us/test/alert.shtml
Click on the “Simply Click This Button” button and watch the response.

The solution you provide was not successful. I can get as far as the DOS window, to the SysWOW64 directory.
When I enter "regsvr32 jscript.dll" I get this warning:
The module "jscript.dll" was loaded but the call to
DLLRegisterSErver failed with error code 0x80004005.
For more information about this problem, search
online using the error code as a search item.
When I enter "regsvr32 jscript9.dll" I get this warning:
The module "jscript9.dll" was loaded but the call to
DLLRegisterSErver failed with error code 0x80004005.

online using the error code as a search item.
Please advise...

Have you been running the Command prompt "As Administrator"?
If so, then the solution for you might be to uninstall IE9. Windows will in this case revert to the older IE8. See here how to uninstall your IE9.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/how-do
Remember to reboot your computer after performing this operation.

Thanks for the prompt reply ... but still no luck.
I removed IE9. IE8 is the default browser.
Yes, the DOS window is being run as Administrator.
I am now getting a different error message when I run regsvr32 jscript9.dll. It is:
==========================================
The module "jscript9.dll" failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored in the specified path or debut it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.
The specified module cannot be found.
========================================
I am now getting the same error message when I run regsvr32 jscript.dll. It is:
==========================================
The module "jscript.dll" was loaded but the call to
DLLRegisterSErver failed with error code 0x80004005.
For more information about this problem, search
online using the error code as a search item.

[It seems to me that Windows 7 (64bit) is causing Skype many problems. Perhaps you need a new release of Skype. ]

Sorry for not telling this, but jscript9.dll is only used by IE9. So, when you have deleted IE9, jscript9.dll was deleted too because this dll is not required for IE8.
Have you actually tried to run the JavaScript test using now IE8? Also, your Skype may also work now without any additional dll registrations.

I tried MrEd's website. I get the confirmation message "Your JavaScript Is Working".
From the 'Welcome Skype' login window, which appears after I click on the Skype icon on the desktop, a Windows Explorer instance opens "C:/ProgramData/Skype/Apps/login/". I get an additional Windows Explorer when I attempt to click on the "Sign me in when Skype starts" box. I get an additional Windows Explorer when I attempt to click on the "Start Skype when computer starts" box.
If I close IE8 and use Firefox, I get the same sort of error messages.

This is really weird.
You can try this procedure, which should enable login, but may expect other problems with your Skype. Particularly, the “Add a contact” function” may not work.
Quit Skype. Make sure that you don’t see any Skype.exe processes in Windows Task Manager. If necessary, then stop these processes. Open C:\Program Files (x86)\ folder. Find the Skype folder and then Phone. Right click on the Skype.exe file and select: Send to – Desktop (create shortcut).
Right click on the newly created shortcut and select Properties and then the Shortcut tab. In the Target field you will see now: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe".
Click with your mouse on the text in the Target field and move your curser one space after the last quotation sign and add the text /legacylogin. The text in the Target field should now read:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe" /legacylogin
Click OK to save the changes. Start Skype using this new shortcut.

What about the "Add a contact" function? Is it working?
