Skype account age limit

I'm trying to sign my daughter up for and account ( to chat to cousins). but the Signup screen Birth date is in red with the message

"We're sorry, but you're ineligible to register for a Skype account. We apologize for the inconvenience"

I can't find any reference to a age limit.

Is there one?

There is no fixed age. That said, this still applies to be able to use Skype, so your Location/Residence defines the minimum age requirements, since you must be legally old enough, to be bound by the terms of the Skype agreements to be able to download/use Skype software ("See Underlined Text Below"):

2. ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS

2.1 In order to download and/or use the Software, Products and/or Skype Websites you must first accept these Terms. These Terms are accepted by you (a) when you click to accept or agree the Terms; or (b) when you download and/or use the Software, Products and/or Skype Websites. We advise you to print a copy of these Terms for your records. These Terms remain effective from the date of acceptance until terminated by you or Skype in accordance with paragraph 11.

"2.2 You cannot accept these Terms if: (a) you are not lawfully entitled to use the Software, Products and/or Skype Websites in the country in which you are located or resident or (b) if you are not of legal age to form a binding agreement with Skype."

Re: Skype account age limit

But that means there should be an option for the parent to approve the sign-up, correct? I was expecting the following page after the sign-up to have this option, but all it did was block the form from going through, like it did for the OP.

Hi,
i was also trying to do same and had same problem. i can only guess they restrict to the legal age and by that they mean old enough to vote etc 18. My daughters friends have Skype accounts in their own names and so again i can only guess their parents must have opened one for them with a dummy date of birth.
what i was expecting was to be able to set up a main account in my name and then set up sub accounts under the main umbrella of the main account like you can with email accounts.

do you know if you can edit the account name in the Skype app on her ipod or will this alter the overall account.
sorry to explain i set up the accoutn on the home Windows 7 PC but she wants to skype her friends using the Skype app on her ipod.

any help please would be great many thanks

Phil

Re: Skype account age limit

The legal age depends on your country. I think in most countries it's 12 years of age. If you want to create an account for your kid you should enter your birthdate, because in fact you are the one creating that account.

I recommend a search for your problem and to download the latest Skype.
To get the most out of Skype I recommend Skype Premium.

Re: Skype account age limit

Picking up where Community Manager Claudius left off ...

What I was expecting was to be able to set up a main account in my name and then set up sub accounts under the main umbrella of the main account like you can with email accounts.

Skype does not have the facility to set up a multi-tiered e-mail system such as is available through cable TV companies and other internet service purveyors.  Skype is a "flat" system; in other words, users have their own accounts.  It is that simple!

Do you know if you can edit the account name in the Skype app on her ipod or will this alter the overall account.

[Regarding the overall account concept; we reviewed this in the previous paragraph.]

From my becoming recently familiar with the Skype app on my new iPad and the Skype app on my iPod Touch, these Skype applications are "thin," i.e. these do not offer the settings choices available on other Skype client platforms.  I set up my account entirely on my Win7 laptop, and then the account follows suit on both the iPad and iPod.  Your daughter can simply sign on to Skype using the account name and password which you have set up for her.
