Sound through laptop speakers despite ring settings being set to headphones

Hi,

I use my laptop to listen to music on headphones at my desk and when someone calls on skype everything (music+ringing) comes blaring loudly through the speakers, leaving me red-faced while every coworker in a 100-foot radius shrugs disapprovingly. Same thing when opening/closing skype. The ringing is already set to headphones-only in the audio settings, but it does not seem to have any effect.

Thanks,

  Steven

See this tutorial on Windows audio devices.

Try to change the options for Default Communication Device, as described in this article.

Re: Sound through laptop speakers despite ring settings being set to headphones

I'm having the same problem on an HP DV7 running windows.  Your link really isn't specific enough to answer the question.  In Skype options I set the Speakers and Ringing section to "Independent dual headphones" rather than "Speakers and dual headphones".  But if I play a test sound from Options/Sounds my music and the sound start blasting through the speakers.  In Windows "Control Panel/Manage Audio Devices" the headphones are the default communication device.  The "Speakers and dual headphones" are the default device.  I can't set the headphones to be the default device.  It's not an option.  I can set the speakers to be the default communication device too, but that doesn't help me.  Certainly many others have this problem and just are living with it.  It just happened to the guy sitting next to me at the cafe.
